HEI requests proposals to improve assessment of long-term exposure to air pollution

March 15, 2019

HEI has issued Request for Applications (RFA) 19-1: Applying Novel Approaches to Improve Long-Term Exposure Assessment of Outdoor Air Pollution for Health Studies. HEI is seeking to fund studies to advance exposure assessment for air pollution and health studies using sensors, mobile monitoring, tracking technologies, and other approaches, with a focus on improving assessment of long-term exposures. Please refer to our Funding page for details.

HEI welcomes ideas for next Strategic Plan

February 8, 2019

Quality science to inform decisions does not just happen — it takes a careful strategic effort, drawing from the best minds in policy and science to ensure that the most relevant answers can be produced in time for key upcoming decisions. HEI is now preparing to develop its Strategic Plan for Understanding the Health Effects of Air Pollution for the years 2020 to 2025. In the process it will draw on ideas from sponsors, the scientific community, and the broader community of environmental and other stakeholders.

Annual Report 2018
Health Effects Institute
2019
Topics:

The 2018 Annual Report, Promoting Dialogue, Building Trust, describes how HEI provides a balanced forum where diverse stakeholders find common ground to discuss HEI’s high quality, impartial, and relevant science informing public policy on air quality and public health. The report highlights HEI’s latest achievements and initiatives.

HEI is hiring!

January 25, 2019

HEI is looking for a digital communications manager, two research assistants, and an epidemiologist to join our staff in Boston MA. More information can be found on our Careers page.

HEI requests applications for Accountability research and New Investigator Award

December 7, 2018

HEI has issued two requests for applications: RFA 18-1: Assessing Health Effects of Air Quality Actions at the National, Regional, and Local Levels solicits the next round of accountability studies to evaluate the effectiveness of measures to improve air quality in improving public health. RFA 18-2: Walter Rosenblith New Investigator Award solicits proposals from applicants at the Assistant Professor level for research on air pollution and health. Please refer to our Funding page for details.

Student and Postdoc Travel Award - 2019 Annual Conference

November 29, 2018

HEI is inviting applications for a Travel Award for its 2019 Annual Conference. Up to three award winners will be invited to present posters on their research at HEI’s conference held May 5-7, 2019 in Seattle, Washington. Travel awards will be awarded on a competitive basis, upon review of the application and proposed abstract. The award covers the costs of conference registration, travel, hotel, and meals. The submission deadline is February 5, 2019.

Two important new HEI studies underway

November 7, 2018

HEI has funded two new studies under a general request for applications (RFA 17-2) on the health effects of air pollution. Dr. Amir Hakami and colleagues will perform a health impact assessment of decreased emissions of  various pollutants. Dr. Roel Vermeulen and colleagues will conduct a large cohort study investigating long-term air pollution and cause-specific mortality in Asia.

HEI is reviewing initial findings from “low exposure levels” research

November 7, 2018

HEI is reviewing the first results from an HEI study that it expects will be relevant to an ongoing review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the federal standard for allowable concentrations of fine particles in the air. The study is one of three comprehensive studies that HEI is funding to examine the possible health effects from exposure to pollutants at low concentrations.

Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award announced

October 31, 2018

Manabu Shiraiwa, who was recently promoted to associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine, was selected to receive HEI’s 2018 Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award for his proposal “Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species by Organic Aerosols and Transition Metals in Epithelial Lining Fluid.”

Now available: HEI comments on EPA transparency proposal

August 20, 2018

HEI President Dan Greenbaum provided oral testimony on July 17 at a hearing convened by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington, D.C., on its proposed “Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science” rule. HEI publishes report on household air pollution and noncommunicable disease

July 31, 2018

HEI has published Communication 18, a critical assessment of the state of the science examining the linkages between household air pollution formed by the burning of solid fuels and noncommunicable diseases. The report updates previous systematic reviews with the most recent studies. It answers fundamental questions on the scientific basis for estimating health burden and what the evidence suggests about the exposure reductions necessary to achieve improved health outcomes. The Summary for Policy Makers, based on Communication 18, presents the main conclusions about exposures to household air pollution and about its contribution to noncommunicable diseases globally.
