Request for Qualifications and Proposal for Quality Assurance Oversight

June 1, 2016

HEI is seeking qualified contractors to provide quality assurance services for studies investigating the adverse health effects of low levels of air pollution. The deadline for proposal submission is August 31, 2016. For more information please contact Hanna Boogaard at HEI.

"Direct" Approach Evaluates Air Quality Interventions

May 31, 2016

HEI Research Report 187, Causal Inference Methods for Estimating Long-Term Health Effects of Air Quality Regulations, was funded as part of HEI’s Accountability research program, aimed at understanding whether actions to improve air quality have resulted in improved health outcomes.

Rapid Heart Rhythm Changes After PM Exposure

May 31, 2016

HEI Research Report 186Ambient and Controlled Particle Exposures as Triggers for Acute ECG Changes, reports a study conducted by David Rich and Annette Peters and their teams using data from four previously completed studies (two panel studies and two controlled-exposure studies).

Spring 2016 Update now available

May 18, 2016

The Spring 2016 newsletter reports on a third study under way in Europe to complete the comprehensive HEI effort to examine the potential health effects of air pollution at low levels; HEI's new research program focusing on the health effects of exposure to traffic-related pollution; and the GBD MAPS team's presentation of preliminary data on coal’s impact on health in China, and more.

Novel Statistical Methods for Studying Pollutant Mixtures

April 7, 2016

HEI Research Report 183, Part 3Modeling of Multipollutant Profiles and Spatially Varying Health Effects with Applications to Indicators of Adverse Birth Outcomes, describes a study to develop and apply statistical methods to analyze the effects of multipollutant exposures on health, expanding beyond the two-pollutant approaches used in many studies to date.

Calculating Air Pollution’s Impact on Health

February 4, 2016

Members of HEI’s Global Burden of Disease Major Air Pollution Sources (GBD MAPS) Working Group met at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) on January 18 and 19. Participants in the meeting, hosted by GBD MAPS collaborators at IITB’s Interdisciplinary Program in Climate Studies, included Working Group members from India, China, the United States, and Canada. The scientists reviewed the most recent estimates of emissions from major sources of air pollution in India and preliminary estimates of their contribution to current and future PM2.5 levels.
