Apply for the 2023 Jane Warren Award!
The Health Effects Institute invites graduate students and postdocs to apply for the Jane Warren Award for attending and presenting at HEI’s Annual Conference 2023.
This award is named in remembrance of Dr. Jane Warren, who joined HEI in the 1980s and led HEI’s scientific activities as Director of Science from 1999 until her retirement in 2008.
Up to six award winners will be invited to present their research as part of HEI’s Annual Conference 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts, which will be held April 30-May 2, 2023. Winners will receive a $300 honorarium and will present their work in a lightning talk and poster session during the conference. HEI will cover registration and meals for all awardees. We aim to fund three applicants from institutions in the greater Boston area and three applicants affiliated with institutions elsewhere in North America (See details below).
Applicants affiliated with institutions outside the Boston area will receive reimbursement for travel and accommodations for the duration of the conference. Please note if you apply as a local candidate, travel expenses and accommodations will not be covered by HEI.
Awardees will be selected on a competitive basis, upon review of the application and proposed abstract (see below).

Eligibility
If applying to the local track, applicants must be graduate students or postdocs at academic or research institutions in the greater Boston area.
If applying to the general track, applicants must be graduate students or postdocs at academic or research institutions in North America.
The applicant’s research cannot be currently funded by HEI.
The applicant’s research must be aligned with HEI’s research interests in air pollution, exposure, and health as described in HEI's Strategic Plan. Submitted abstracts should fall into one of more of the following categories:
Accountability
Air Pollution Mixtures
Transport and Urban Health
Global Health
Environmental Justice
Climate Change Co-benefits
Energy and Environment
The applicant must be able to attend HEI’s Annual Conference from April 30- May 2, 2023, at the Boston Renaissance Waterfront Hotel. Program details will be posted soon here.
Selection Criteria
Scientific merit and quality of the written and visual abstract
Relevance to, or advancement of, HEI’s research interests in environmental health
Application Materials
Includes submission locations for the written and visual abstract
Written Abstract
500-word limit including title, authors, and affiliations (see instructions above)
The applicant must be the first author and presenter; and
Limit one written abstract per applicant
Visual Abstract
One page limit including images, text, and references (see examples above)
