This webinar aimed to share results from the recently published HEI Research Report, Mortality–Air Pollution Associations in Low-Exposure Environments (MAPLE): Phase 2, by Dr. Michael Brauer from The University of British Columbia and his colleagues. The team combined satellite data, air monitor sampling, and atmospheric modeling to estimate ambient PM2.5 levels across Canada from 1981 to 2016. They evaluated the association between ambient PM2.5 exposure and mortality among 7.1 million Canadian adults. The analysis also included in-depth modeling of the concentration-response curve.

The study is the final in a set of three studies funded by HEI to explore the health effects from air pollution exposure at levels below government-recommended standards. Members of HEI’s Low-Exposure Epidemiology Studies Review Panel also discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the study, and how the findings might influence ambient air quality standards.
