Virtual Workshop on Non-Tailpipe Particulate Matter Emissions and Exposure
With the substantial and ongoing reductions in tailpipe emissions of particulate matter and other exhaust components, there is increasing interest in better characterization of non-tailpipe emissions and their potential health effects, specifically, particles from tire and brake wear and road dust.
In view of the importance of this issue, HEI organized a two-day virtual workshop on November 12-13, 2020 bringing together experts from a range of topics related to brake and tire wear emissions, their impacts on air quality, and potential associations between exposures and health effects.
The specific objectives of the workshop were (1) to understand the state of the science related to measuring and modeling non-tailpipe particulate matter emissions and exposure assessment, and (2) to identify research priorities related to knowledge gaps in this area that can be used by HEI and other organizations in planning future research.
The workshop was chaired by Dr. Allen Robinson, Carnegie Mellon University and Member of HEI Research Committee, and Dr. Meredith Franklin, University of Southern California and was attended by approximately 50 researchers and government and industry representatives from the US, Europe, and Japan.
Planning Committee: Allison Patton, Pallavi Pant, Dan Crouse, Martha Ondras, Joanna Keel, Allen Robinson, Meredith Franklin, Annemoon van Erp, Dan Greenbaum, and Rashid Shaikh
