of Science
Health Effects Institute (HEI) invites nominations and
applications for the position of Director of Science. HEI
seeks as Director of Science a highly accomplished, energetic,
and articulate leader who brings a strong science background
and the capacity to interact effectively with a wide variety
of individuals. This is a unique opportunity for a top scientific
leader to join HEI’s leadership team and to contribute
to its increasingly critical mission. Reporting to the President,
the Director is the strategic and administrative head of
scientific operations.
The Director of Science is a pivotal member of the HEI team, overseeing
internal operations and interacting with key external constituencies,
including the Board of Directors, scientific committees, sponsors,
and the scientific community. S/He works closely with a broad range
of stakeholders and HEI team members in all aspects of the organization’s
scientific work, including strategic planning, research project management,
and scientific oversight and review.
The ideal candidate must possess a broad view of health effects science,
solid management capabilities and experience, outstanding communication
skills, and the capacity to lead, guide, and mentor a highly capable
and accomplished group of scientists. The Director of Science will
have a strategic orientation, a strong record as a consensus builder,
and a demonstrated ability to organize diverse staff and other experts
including the ability to operate as a facilitator and partner to world-class
scientific leaders and policy-makers. The next Director will be an
exceptional collaborator and bring outstanding managerial experience
and the capability to oversee complicated processes and institute best
practices. Excellent writing and editing skills are essential. An earned
doctorate in biological or physical sciences, epidemiology, public
health, or other relevant field, or equivalent experience, is required.
Health Effects Institute (HEI), a leading independent, nonprofit
research institute, has provided rigorous, impartial, and
important science to the national and global public debate
on the health effects of air pollution over the last quarter-century.
Supported jointly by the US Environmental Protection Agency
and industry, and periodically by other domestic and international
partners, HEI provides science to inform key national and
international regulatory decisions and other actions that
are directly relevant to improving air quality. HEI’s
approach is centered on funding high-quality, independent
scientific studies that are strategically selected and carefully
designed to inform upcoming decisions about air quality policy.
HEI funds research at leading institutions throughout the
world through competitive selection processes, oversees this
research attentively, and publishes its findings broadly,
enabling policymakers to apply it in their actions to protect
the public health.

Editorial Assistant NEW
The Health Effects Institute is a nonprofit organization that funds and publishes epidemiologic, toxicologic, and other research on the effects of air pollution on health; it is widely accepted as a source of impartial, relevant, and high-quality scientific information for decision makers in
government and elsewhere. HEI’s core funds come primarily from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the worldwide motor vehicle industry. It also receives funds from governments, other industries, and foundations for projects in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. HEI currently is funding a wide range of research at universities and research centers in many countries.
DESCRIPTION
The editorial assistant provides general administrative and editorial support to both in-house and consulting members of the Publications staff, who prepare lengthy and complex scientific reports for release on the Web and in print. He or she reports to the Director of Publications. Job responsibilities include
• Providing support for a small editorial and production group, both in-house staff and outside consultants, assisting with tasks and problems as they arise
• Scheduling meetings, photocopying, ordering supplies, and preparing packages for UPS
• Monitoring schedules, tasks, and status for several projects
• Scheduling work with outside proofreaders, editors, and others; gathering, preparing, and sending manuscripts and other materials
• Locating, sending, and tracking articles and photos for the Update newsletter and Annual Report
• Tracking, documenting, and updating publications procedures, house style, and materials for common use
• Becoming expert in Outlook and Word, especially macros, fonts, and HEI styles
• Becoming expert in HEI citation style and verifying references online for some projects
• Proofreading, especially items for immediate turnaround
• Reviewing galleys and pages for house style per checklists
• Serving as primary contact with printer
• Helping to maintain photo archives, contacting photographers, and scheduling photo shoots as needed
REQUIREMENTS
This position requires a motivated individual able to multitask and prioritize work. The job entails both sustained attention to complex tasks and immediate responsiveness to others as the need arises. The ability to develop strong relationships with the members of the in-house and consulting Publications staff, with staff scientists and others within HEI, and with outside vendors and contractors is essential. The editorial assistant will be expected to learn the procedures of the Publications Department and gradually assume greater responsibility.
A bachelor’s degree and two to four years of experience in a publishing environment are required, as is a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Word). Facility with databases such as Excel and Access and familiarity with medical and scientific terminology are desirable.
This is a full-time in-house position at HEI's office in Boston, Mass. Salary is commensurate with experience. HEI offers a competitive benefits package and is an equal opportunity employer.
